The Body as Input: Computing the Unknown Reality

Introduction: Reclaiming the Power of Sight Beyond the Black Box of Algorithms


In 2025, WHYIXD was invited by the CMP Museum of Arts to curate the winter special exhibition Input > Unknown, inviting visitors to participate in the generation of an emerging, unknown reality. Continuing the museum’s ethos of “Unlocking Imagination,” the project responds to an era in which the boundaries between physical and virtual realities are increasingly blurred. We face not only technological shifts but also a new set of questions regarding ethics, resources, meaning, and existence.


In this age of rapid digital evolution, our understanding of “reality” is often organized by algorithms hidden within an opaque black box. As the world becomes more predictable, are we still aware that we actively participate in constructing what we perceive? Input > Unknown is a response to this question: reality is not a fixed outcome, but an ongoing process of generation.


Borrowing the syntax of the computer command prompt “Input >,” the exhibition frames the entire venue as an open system awaiting computation. The visitor’s body, senses, and actions serve as the “input data.” Every movement triggers a line of code; every gaze generates a new result. This is an experiment in the uncertainty of “viewing,” inviting participants to engage in a sensory computation of the unknown and re-examine familiar boundaries—when you alter your angle of observation, the world returns a different face.


The exhibition’s structure mirrors both computer logic and the underlying rules of the world: from the initiation of perception (Boot), to bodily computation (Processing), to data rendering (Rendering), and finally, collective co-creation (Sandbox Mode). It is a corporeal computation experiment and a philosophical dialogue on the nature of the unknown.


Four Stages of a Generative Unknown World


Curated and created by WHYIXD, in collaboration with the German sound art laboratory Kling Klang Klong, Taiwanese visual studio HOUTH, and artist Chih-Wei Chuang, this journey constructs a multisensory experience woven from light, sound, wind, and data. The exhibition begins with the activation of the body, gradually delves into digital illusions, and culminates in collective co-creation.


01. [Boot] — Hello World

The journey begins with a bodily “boot-up ritual.” The entry pass is a custom-made polarizer. Similar to a computer’s “Boot” process, visitors must rotate and adjust their viewing angle to decode hidden messages within the light, opening a personalized perceptual interface.


On-site machines present daily ethical dilemmas (e.g., environmental agency, technological equity, privacy), inviting visitors to vote “Accept” or “Deny,” activating critical reflection and conscious action.


02. [Processing] — Dynamic Field

After booting, the body descends to the lower level to face the monumental Dynamic Field. This stage represents the “Processing” phase. A massive pixel matrix, built from polarizing surfaces and kinetic mechanisms, employs an entirely analog, hands-on approach—hand-applied lightboxes and varying film thickness—to generate an intensely digital visual state.


Here, the body is the primary subject of image generation. Every step and breath interacts with the space, performing real-time computation of light and reality.


03. [Rendering] — Tender Soul of Ocean: recall

Following bodily computation, visitors enter a darkened realm. This work represents the “Rendering” of prior inputs. It gathers real-time weather data (wind) from the museum’s exterior and crowd flow data from the interior, translating these “Inputs” into fluid patterns of light and sound.


All audio-visual elements are algorithmically generated, without any pre-recorded samples, creating an inherently “natural” digital environment. Visitors become co-authors of this environmental rhythm, sensing the continuous resonance between climate, sound, and human presence.


04. [Sandbox Mode] — Spectrum of White

The final chapter, created by Chih-Wei Chuang, opens a “Sandbox Mode.” Using the refractive properties of polarizing film, the work returns to the most elemental input: touch. Visitors leave traces with their fingertips, participating in the work’s ongoing formation.


Individual acts of input converge into a collective field of consciousness. The once-white surface gradually reveals a vibrant spectrum, forming a “white rainbow” collectively generated by participants, symbolizing the evolving vitality of human connection.


Reality as a Dynamic Generation Established Through Choice


In the luminous field where analog and digital converge, Input > Unknown uses tangible physical phenomena as a metaphor for the operational rules of both digital and real worlds. Just as a subtle shift in the overlapping angle of polarizers alters light intensity, our position and perspective within the information environment determine how the world manifests to us.


The exhibition explores the power dynamics of viewing, bodily subjectivity, and the mechanisms of reality generation. In an age shrouded in data, we tend to believe in the objectivity of the images presented to us, often overlooking that the act of viewing is itself a choice of stance—an exercise of power. Dynamic Field and the stages that follow establish a field that appears objective yet remains perpetually rewriteable. Reality is not a stable destination, but a temporary phenomenon established under specific perceptual conditions.


The exhibition summons a renewed awareness of our active role in existence. Reality is not a passively received objective output, but a dynamic generation arising through bodily intervention and deliberate choice. Amidst a world increasingly sorted by algorithms, we are reminded that we retain the power to perceive and reinterpret—a profound affirmation of our existence.

以身體為輸入,運算未知的真實

導言:在運算的黑盒之外,重新奪回觀看的權力


2025年,何理 WHYIXD受勤美術館邀請,策劃冬季特展《Input > Unknown》,即日起盛大展出,邀請你親身參與未知真實的生成。策展脈絡延續勤美術館以「打開想像」為核心的策展精神,並進一步回應在真實與虛擬邊界逐漸模糊的時代,我們所面臨的不僅僅是技術的革新,更是一系列關於倫理、資源、意義與存在的全新提問。


在數位科技高速演進、虛擬與現實邊界模糊的時代,我們所理解的「真實」往往被隱形於黑盒之中的演算法所排序。當世界被預測,我們是否仍能意識到自己也在參與建構所見之物?


《Input > Unknown》正是對此的回應:真實不只是既定的結果,而是一種持續被生成的過程。


展覽借用電腦命令提示字元「Input >」的語法,將整個展場視為一個待運算的開放系統。觀者的身體、感官與行動,就是這場運算的「輸入資料」。每一次移動都像觸發程式碼,每一次凝視都可能生成新的結果。這是一場探索「觀看」不確定性的實驗,邀請觀眾親身參與這場關於「未知(Unknown)」的感知運算,重新檢視習以為常的界線──當你改變觀察的角度,世界也會回應你以另一種樣貌。


策展團隊指出,展覽的結構仿造了電腦的運作邏輯,同時也暗喻世界的運行規則:從感知的啟動(Boot)、身體的運算(Processing)、數據的渲染(Rendering),到最終的群體共創(Sandbox Mode)。這是一場以身體為核心的運算實驗,亦是一場關於真實與未知的哲學辯證。


未知世界生成的四階段


這場運算之旅,由何理 WHYIXD擔任策展與創作,並攜手德國聲音藝術實驗室Kling Klang Klong、台灣視覺設計團隊 HOUTH,以及藝術家莊志維,共同構築一場融合光、聲、風與數據的多感官體驗。展覽從觀者身體的啟動開始,逐步深入數位幻象,最終匯聚成群體的共創。


01.【啟動|Boot】—〈Hello World〉

旅程始於一場從身體出發的「開機儀式」。入口處的通行證是一片特製的「偏光鏡」,如同電腦的「Boot」(啟動)過程,觀者必須透過旋轉與調整角度,親手解碼隱藏於光影之間的訊息,開啟個人化的感知界面。

同時,現場的機台每日提出關於科技倫理的思辨問題(如環境決定權、科技公平性、個人隱私等),邀請觀者以「Accept/Deny」投票。這不僅是展覽的啟動儀式,更是觀者思考能力與行動意識的開端。


02.【像素力場|Dynamic Field

完成「開機」後,身體進入地下一層,迎面而來的是壯闊的〈Dynamic Field 像素力場〉。這一階段如同整場展覽的「運算過程」(Processing)。由偏光鏡面、旋轉機構與燈光構築的巨大「像素矩陣」,以「非常類比、非常手工」的方式(手工貼製燈箱、以透明片厚度控制色彩)生成極度數位的視覺狀態。

觀者的「身體」在其中不再只是觀看者,而是影像生成的主體。每一個步伐、每一次呼吸,都使身體與空間即時共振,進行著一場關於光影與真實的運算。


03.【氣候感測|Tender Soul of Ocean: recall

經歷了身體的運算,觀者隨後進入〈海境:回溯〉的暗黑場域。這件作品是運算後的「渲染結果」(Rendering)。它擷取勤美術館戶外的即時氣候資料(風的資訊)與現場人流數據,將這些「Input」轉譯為流動的光影與聲音。

所有聲光皆自動生成無任何取樣,以數位方式建構出極度「自然」的景象。觀者如同置身於由風與海洋訊號編織的波光之境,成為環境節奏的共構者,感受氣候、聲音與人之間持續共鳴的生命場。


04.【群體共創|Spectrum of White

展覽的最終章〈白色彩虹〉,由藝術家莊志維創作。如果前面的階段是既定的程式,這裡則開啟一個「沙盒模式」(Sandbox Mode)。

作品運用偏光鏡獨特的折射特性,回歸最純粹的「輸入」形式:觸碰。觀者以手指觸碰、留下痕跡,親身參與作品的生成。每一個獨立的行為(Input),都能匯聚成共感的意識場。隨著指印與動作不斷堆疊,純白的偏光片逐漸映現出繽紛光譜,最終形成一道由眾人共同構築、不斷變化的「彩虹」。它象徵著人際網絡的連結,映照群體共同定義、持續生成的生命力。


真實,是選擇之後才成立的動態生成


在類比與數位交會的光場之中,《Input > Unknown》以真實的物理現象暗喻數位世界與真實世界的運行規則:如同偏光片交疊角度的微小差異會改變光的明暗強弱,人類在資訊環境中的位置與視角,也決定了世界向我們顯現的方式。


這場展覽重新召喚了觀者對於存在與觀看的主動意識。它提醒我們,真實並非一個被動接受的客觀輸出,而是一種在身體介入、選擇發生之後才得以成立的動態生成。當世界被演算法排序,我們透過這場實驗重新意識到:我們仍然擁有觀看與改寫的能力。 這種重新掌握主體性的自覺,本身就是對存在最深刻的回應與確證。
