PROJECTS
In the flow of light and shadow, a collective takes flight in subtle rhythm, like heartbeats quietly resonating with one another. Amid the unpredictability of the unknown, they gather into an upward force—light, gentle, yet steadfast.
Swarm Flying draws inspiration from the collective behaviors found in nature. Whether it is a swarm of bees using collective intelligence to seek an ideal place for a hive, or a flock of birds adjusting to shifting air currents as they move through the sky, each individual senses, responds, and collaborates with others, forming a support system that reaches beyond the strength of a single being. Through this imagery, the artwork reflects how, in moments of uncertainty, individuals remain connected and interdependent, finding companionship, trust, and a sense of steadiness as they move forward together.
The form of the artwork is inspired by the Flamecrest, an endemic bird species found in Taiwan’s mid- to high-altitude mountain forests. With its vivid golden crown and wings, the bird shimmers in flight—at times reflecting a sunlit gold, and at others revealing a silvery glow like light refracted through ice and snow. This fleeting transformation of color and motion is translated into a cluster of kinetic units on the wall. As the dual-sided metallic components turn between gold and silver, they evoke wings moving through the wind, leaving behind layered traces of flight within the space.
Rather than using any built-in lighting, Swarm Flying relies solely on the reflective qualities of metal to capture ambient light and create shimmering, wave-like visual movement. As viewers move through the space, and as the surrounding light shifts, the artwork continually appears, fades, and gathers again in rhythm. Like birds sensing and adjusting to one another in the wind, the installation unfolds through a soft yet lively motion, speaking of unity, agility, wisdom, and the quiet formation of trust within a collective.
